Flamenco in Andalusia has always been first about song, then dance and lastly guitar, yet outside Spain it is most closely associated with solo guitar playing. There are good reasons for this but the most significant factor was the exodus of so many artists, writers, poets and musicians from Spain at the end of the Civil War.

One was a guitarist called Sabicas who went to the USA. Sabicas was responsible for the birth of solo flamenco guitar and it was he who suggested to a young Paco De Lucia the possibilities of solo flamenco guitar. This later made Paco De Lucia into a pop star in Spain and fuelled an explosion of flamenco guitar playing whose success lay largely outside that country. This is the tradition of Flamenco guitar playing that I follow and have applied to my playing and my compositions.
